As part of the launch tour for my new book, HUNTRESS (Angebound Offspring #7), the lovely blogger Aubrey Wynne asked me to share the tunes that inspired me while writing. The full playlist is here on YouTube, but I’ve chosen five highlights to share today.

So without further ado, here are my top five songs!

Tune Number Five. Wonder by Natalie Merchant

“They say I must be one of the wonders of god’s own creation. And as far as they can see they can offer no explanation.”

In HUNTRESS, I’ve built up a world of glass dragons who have both insect-style wings and a related hive mind. As for the main character, Huntress has some special powers for the glass dragon colony, which is what makes this song resonate for me.

Tune Number Four. Down By The Water by PJ Harvey

“Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water. Come back here and give me my daughter.”

Along the ‘hive mind’ line of thinking, there are things about the glass dragons that get broken or suppressed. This song channels that feeling for me, since it’s all about wanting to get back something you’ve lost.

Tune Number Three. Thunder by Imagine Dragons

“I was lightning before the thunder.”

Almost every time I write a book, I end up obsessing on an Imagine Dragons song. This time, it was Thunder. This song encapsulates both Huntress as well as her guy, Gage. Both are leaders to their people… the lightning before the thunder.Tune Number Two. Glory Road by Neal Diamond

“Hey, friend! Have you seen glory road?”

This song is nominally about hitchhiking, but there’s something about the tune and delivery that encapsulate a kind of male longing that really helped me tap into the character of Gage.

Tune Number One. Love Me Again by John Newman

“I wanna know now… wanna knoooooow now… can you love me again?”

This is another song that helped me write both Huntress and Gage. In many ways, they are star-crossed lovers. The way John Newman sings the refrain also calls to mind the special kind of romantic longing that can take over your heart.

So there you have it—my top five tunes while writing HUNTRESS! I hope you enjoyed this list and I look forward to seeing you again on a future book launch!
